NDO – Vietnam’s men secured promotion to the division two of the World Team Table Tennis Championships after beating their Israeli opponents with a score of 3-1 at the ongoing 2018 competition in Halmstad, Sweden on May 5.

Vietnam, playing in the division three, participated in this year’s tournament with only three players, namely Dinh Quang Linh, Nguyen Anh Tu, and Doan Ba Tuan Anh.

In the preliminary stage, Vietnam finished as the runner-up after losing 1-3 to Indonesia, but still advanced into the knockout round together with two other group members, Indonesia and Cuba.

The knockout stage saw Vietnam subsequently oust Saudi Arabia and Finland with the same score of 3-1 to set up a semifinal encounter with the Israeli, who recorded a quarterfinal 3-2 win against Indonesia.

Doan Ba Tuan Anh secured Vietnam a 1-0 lead over Israel by handling Omri Ben Ari 3-2, before Nguyen Anh Tu doubled the advantage with another 3-2 victory against Mathan Simon.

Nguyen Anh Tu scores crucial wins for the Vietnamese team.

Dinh Quang Linh failed to create a stir against Yonatan Shusterman, losing 1-3 in the third match, but key player Nguyen Anh Tu made light work of Omri Ben Ari 3-1 in the fourth clash to seal Vietnam a convincing 3-1 triumph.

The crucial victory over Israel lifted head coach Nguyen Nam Hai’s side into the division three final against Lithuania, who saw off Malaysia with a score of 3-1 in another semifinal.

More importantly, the exceptional result helped Vietnam’s men’s table tennis to gain a promotion to the division two at the 2020 World Team Championships.

The title match of the division three between Vietnam and Lithuania is scheduled to take place on May 6 (Vietnamese time).
