NDO – Ho Chi Minh City I successfully defended their national women’s football crown after beating hosts Phong Phu Ha Nam 4-3 in the penalty shootout of the 2017 final match on December 3.

Sharing the same opportunity for the championship title, both teams boldly deployed their favourite playing styles right from the start, with manager Kim Chi’s HCM City playing offensively while manager Nguyen The Cuong chose the counterattack strategy for the Ha Nam side.

Vu Thi Thuy put the host team in the lead after 20 minutes with a shot at the top corner, forcing the guests to concede their first goal after nine consecutive matches of keeping a clean sheet.

The 2017 trophy should have been awarded to Phong Phu Ha Nam without Hong Nhung’s own goal in the 24th minute.

The pace of the final encounter was accelerated from that moment. Despite dominating ball possession, HMC City I created few scoring opportunities against Ha Nam’s concentrated defensive line.

Failing to net any other goal in the remaining official minutes of play, the two sides had to let their fate be decided by the penalty shootout, in which HCM City produced four successful converters compared to just three by the Ha Nam side.

This is the seventh time in history that HCM City have been crowned the national women’s football champions. They are now just three trophies fewer than Ha Noi.

With the overall crown, HCM City pocketed VND300 million (US$13,200) in prize money, while Phong Phu Ha Nam brought home VND200 million as the runners-up. Vinacomin and Hanoi I shared the third prize with VND100 million each.

Three stakes of VND10 million were awarded to the best player of the tournament, Nguyen Thi Lieu from Phong Phu Ha Nam; the top scorer Huynh Nhu from HCM City I,with nine goals, and the best goalkeeper Dang Thi Kieu Trinh from HCM City I.
