Murray, Mattek-Sands win US Open mixed doubles

Britian’s Jamie Murray and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands captured the US Open mixed doubles title with a 2-6 6-3 11-9 victory over Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and Poland’s Alicja Rosolska on Sunday.

* Spain began a new era under Luis Enrique in impressive fashion as they came from a goal down to outplay England in a 2-1 win in their Nations League opener at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

* Bosnia began their Nations League campaign with a 2-1 victory away to Northern Ireland on Saturday - Haris Duljevic and Elvis Saric on target for the visitors.

* Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah scored twice and missed two penalties as Egypt made a dream debut under Mexican coach Javier Aguirre by crushing Niger 6-0 on Saturday (Sep 8) in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

* Spain's Jorge Lorenzo took pole position for Sunday's San Marino MotoGP with a lap record in Saturday's qualifying. Lorenzo beat his own lap record set in 2016 with a time of one minute 31.629 seconds at the Misano circuit, ahead of fellow Ducati rider Jack Miller of Australia and Yamaha's Maverick Vinales.

* Britain's Simon Yates snatched back the leader's red jersey at the Vuelta a Espana after a stunning late attack propelled him to victory in Saturday's stage 14, giving him a 20-second advantage at the top of the general classification.

* Ian Stannard won the Tour of Britain's seventh stage on Saturday (Sep 8), but France's Julian Alaphilippe retained the overall lead heading to the race finale in London. Team Sky rider Stannard moved clear of a breakaway group with 16 kilometres to go and eventually finished 59 seconds ahead of Germany's Nils Politt.
