NDO – Vietnam remain on course to book a place in the semifinals of the 2018 AFF U-19 Championship after making light work of Laos with a score of 4-1 in the Group A Matchday 3 on July 5.

Coach Hoang Anh Tuan asked his players to proactively press and control the pace of the match right from the first whistle, but it was not until the 24th minute that the deadlock was broken in favour of Vietnam thanks to Danh Trung’s goal.

The opener helped to relieve the pressure from the “yellow stars”, inspiring them to score two additional goals in the remainder of the first half, with Van Cong and Van Toi finding the back of the net in the 36th minute and in injury time.

The one sided match continued in the same vein after half time, as Hoang Anh Tuan’s side poured waves of attacks on the Lao side seeking to extend their advantage.

Vietnam’s efforts were paid off with a fourth goal by Huu Thang in the 75th minute.

Laos managed to reduce the score to 1-4 thanks to Kydavone’s consolation goal one minute from time.

In the other Group A match on the same day, Thailand demolished Singapore by six straight goals to claim second place in the provisional group table, beating Vietnam to third place despite sharing the same seven points following two wins and one draw.

Next up for Vietnam will be a tough clash against hosts Indonesia, who currently lead Group A with nine points.

The 2018 AFF U-19 Championship is taking place from July 1 to 14, with 11 teams battling it out in a group-stage round robin tournament to decide the top two group performers, who will advanced into the semifinals.

Group A consists of Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore and the Philippines, while Group B is made up of Timor Leste, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Brunei.
