NDO – The early matches of the 2018 V.League 1 Round 12 on June 8 saw hosts Hai Phong beat struggling FLC Thanh Hoa 2-0, with both goals coming in the first half, while Sanna Khanh Hoa and SHB Da Nang also earned victories.

Cheered on by the home fans at Lach Tray Stadium, Hai Phong attacked straight from the kick-off, but the guests were composed in defence waiting for counterattacking opportunities.

The hosts’ playing style was as usual, passing the ball very quickly to the two spearhead Jamaicans Diego Fagan and Anthony Stevens to make use of their strength. However, the relatively easy tactic by the port city team has repeatedly come undone in the V.League this season, and FLC Thanh Hoa successfully eliminated the attacks launched by the two foreign strikers by utilising a deep-lying and crowded defensive line.

However, the continuous pressure from Hai Phong for nearly two thirds of the first half forced the visitors to make a mistake. In the 30th minute, home player Dinh Bao launched a pass from the left wing. The No. 8 midfielder’s ball touched no-one but its unexpected trajectory easily beat goalkeeper Thanh Thang to earn Hai Phong the opener.

The goal inspired Hai Phong manager Truong Viet Hoang’s players and just over ten minutes later, they doubled the score, thanks to Diego Fagan. A long ball from goalie Van Lam was won by Anthony Stevens in an aerial duel near Thanh Hoa’s box. Stevens’s flick released his teammate Fagan into a 1-on-1 situation and the latter finished simply to widen the gap to 2-0.

After the break, coach Nguyen Duc Thang's team increased their tempo in search of an equaliser. However, Hai Phong’s defensive line stayed firm as goalkeeper Dang Van Lam discouraged the guests with a range of saves. The substitutes from the visiting side did not bring the desired effect; they nearly even conceded another goal but for keeper Thanh Thang maintaining his focus.

The 0-2 defeat means FLC Thanh Hoa were unable to escape their crisis after four consecutive matches without a win. Meanwhile, the victory helps Hai Phong climb up the table to occupy third position previously occupied by Becamex Binh Duong - who were beaten 0-3 at home by Sanna Khanh Hoa on the same day.

In the other matches played yesterday, Can Tho tied 1-1 with Ho Chi Minh City, while SHB Da Nang beat bottom of the table Nam Dinh 4-2.
