NDO - A series of three articles on Vietnam’s marine search and rescue force by Nhan Dan correspondents has won first prize at the national external information service awards 2017.

The award-winning articles were published on the online edition in October last year, recounting the heroic missions by officers of the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre and its regional centres.

Their efforts have saved hundreds of fishermen that were distressed at sea due to typhoons, gas explosions, accidents and diseases.

Nhan Dan also scooped two second prizes, three third prizes and one consolation prize for works in various languages and forms of journalism at this year’s awards, which were given at a ceremony on June 14.

One of the two second prizes belongs to a series of long-form articles in English on a Japanese professor, a young Vietnamese scholar and a group of young enthusiasts who all share the same passion for ancient Vietnamese culture.

The other second prize was awarded to a Russian-language article on the love for Vietnam of Russian children artists who visited Vietnam in November as an award from a painting contest on Vietnam and Russia.

The national external information service awards are presented annually in order to recognise books and press works that present positive images of Vietnam.

The awards were given to 67 works this year, including 8 first prizes, 15 second prizes, 18 third prizes and 27 consolation prizes.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said that the award-winning works made significant contributions to promoting the image of Vietnam as a peaceful and stable country and a responsible member of the international community.

The national external information service awards 2017 are the fourth edition.

Since 2014, it has been an annual event jointly organised by the Central Commission for Communication and Education and the Central Steering Committee for External Information Service.
