NDO – Ho Chi Minh City wishes to receive support from the World Bank (WB) in implementing the development of creative urban areas, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong has said.

Phong made the statement during his reception for Ousmane Dione, WB Country Director in Vietnam, on February 1.

Hailing the emergence of creative urban areas as a boost to economic development in the city and the entire southern key economic zone, he asked the WB to include the content of supporting creative urban area development projects in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two sides on strategic connectivity for the 2017-2020 period.

The city leader also called for the WB’s support in delivering projects to renovate and relocate houses built along or on canals, initiating urban refurbishment in HCM City, and organising an international workshop on the implementation of projects in the form of a public-private partnership (PPP).

For his part, Ousmane Dione affirmed the WB’s willingness to support HCM City in building creative urban areas, suggesting that the city should identify specific issues that the WB could best offer assistance on, such as technical support or the supply of experienced experts in the field.

The WB wishes to coordinate with HCM City in deploying training programmes to enhance the capabilities of officials working in the area of PPP project management, he said, stressing that the institution would continue to support the city in rolling out projects to renovate and evacuate houses along and on canals, as well as in urban refurbishment, in order to improve the quality of life for local citizens and enhance the city’s competitiveness.
