NDO - The Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) has offered aid in cash worth VND200million to families of casualties or missing people in recent floods in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai.

As of September 6, nearly 100 organisations, units and individuals donated more than VND700 million to help the province overcome the damages sustained the floods.

According to the National Steering Committee on Flood and Storm Control, heavy rains and flash floods in early August took the lives of 26 people and left 15 others missing and 27 injured in northern mountainous provinces, mostly in Yen Bai, Son La, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Cao Bang.

Torrential rains and floods also destroyed 231 houses, damaged 245 others, submerged 338.5 hectares of rice, and forced 398 families to leave their homes.

The intense floods also swept away over 25,000 cubic metres of soil from national roads and 117,706 cubic metres from provincial and district roads; damaged 145 irrigation works and 2,072 metres of river dike, causing over VND940 billion (US$41.36 million) in economic losses for the affected provinces.
