NDO – A policy dialogue on environment and sustainable development opened in Hai Phong City, on August 11, attracting the participation of over 200 businesses from across Vietnam’s northern region.

Participants at the event shared their opinions on the challenges facing enterprises in observing legal regulations on environmental protection before commencing a project, including the evaluation of the project’s impact on the environment, granting licenses for the exploitation of water sources, preparing profiles on discharging into receiving waters, and treating hazardous waste.

They also discussed common problems encountered while running a project, including environmental monitoring, transport and disposal of common and hazardous waste, and a list of facilities which are likely to cause environmental pollution and require special surveillance and warnings for the community.

As a delegate at the event, Ta Quyet Thang, director of Son Truong Co., Ltd called on the functional agencies to tighten their management over businesses who apply technology in their operations, as many of them have imported backward technology, which will pose negative impacts on the environment in the long term.

He also asked for more administrative procedure reforms for businesses whose operations don’t need assessment of environmental impacts.

The event was jointly held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).

It aimed to provide an open platform for businesses and State agencies to hold talks on environment, thus putting forward solutions to boost economic growth, while committing to protecting the environment in conjunction with following other sustainable development goals.
