Vietnam wins two gold medals at International Physics Olympiad

NDO – Vietnamese students won five medals, including two golds, at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Switzerland, the Department of Educational Testing and Accreditation under the Ministry of Education and Training announced on July 17.

The two gold medalists were Dinh Thi Huong Thao, a 12th grader from Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in Nam Dinh province, and 11th grader Nguyen The Quynh from Vo Nguyen Giap High School for the Gifted in Quang Binh province.

Thao was also honoured as the ‘Best Female Asian Pacific Participant’ by the Association of Asia-Pacific Physics Societies.

Two silver medals of the Vietnamese delegation were won by Nguyen Quang Nam from the Hanoi National University of Education and Pham Quang Minh from the Hanoi-Amsterdam School for the Gifted.

Meanwhile, Pham Ngoc Nam, Thao’s schoolmate, also brought home a bronze medal.

Since it was first held in 1967, the International Physics Olympiad has gathered around 12,000 young competitors. This year’s event, held in Zurich from July 11 to 17, welcomed 450 secondary school students from 90 delegations.
