Earlier, according to the management board of Con Dao National Park in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, a large swathe of coral reef in Con Dao have suffered bleaching and it is estimated that reef die off extends to an area of about 600ha to 800ha. Coral bleaching occurs very fast, in some places up to 70%.
Bleached and dying coral groups and species are mostly Stony corals, Staghorn corals, reef coral groups and fungal coral species. The depth of bleached coral is from 3 metres to 15 metres.
Through the survey, the cause of the situation has been established as being due to rising sea temperatures and the impact of a stronger El Nino phenomenon.
