NDO – A get-together was jointly held by the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO) and the HCMC Vietnam-France Friendship Association (VFFA-HCMC) on July 12 to celebrate the 229th anniversary of France’s National Day (July 14, 1789-2018).

Addressing the event, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Dung, president of the VFFA-HCMC, expressed her delight at the unceasing development of Vietnam-France friendly relations and their cooperation across diverse spheres.

She noted that during the France visit made by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in March, the two sides affirmed their wish to further deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations in the new period, while agreeing to strengthen high-level exchanges and meetings, and improve the effectiveness of dialogue and cooperation mechanisms.

In that context, the VFFA-HCMC has been effectively performing its function as a bridge for solidarity and friendship between HCMC citizens and those in French localities, through the implementation of France-funded development assistance projects and the organisation of festivals and music and film exhibitions, Dung stated.

For his part, Vincent Floreani, Consul-General of France in HCMC, highly appreciated the HUFO’s organisation of the celebratory get-together, which, he said, reflects the fine sentiments and the traditional friendship between the two countries’ people as a whole, and between HCMC and France in particular.

He pledged to continue working closely with the VFFA-HCMC to effectively implement cooperation programmes and accelerate trade, investment, cultural and art collaboration between the two sides, in order to contribute to strengthening mutual understanding and solidarity, while bringing about practical benefits for the two countries’ peoples.

France is currently among the leading economic partners of Vietnam in the European Union (EU) and one of the largest providers of official development assistance to the Southeast Asian country. By the end of 2017, France ranked 16th out of the total 114 countries and territories investing in Vietnam with 512 projects totalling US$2.8 billion.

In HCM City alone, France is operating 188 projects worth more than US$990 million. In the past few years, the investment projects of French firms in HCM City, the social development programmes of French non-governmental organisations, and the cooperation projects between HCM City and France’s Lyon and Rhone-Alpes region, have contributed to the common development of HCM City, as well as to the enhancement of Vietnam-France ties overall.
