NDO - Today, joining the atmosphere of emulation to greet the 12th National Party Congress, people from across the country are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the first general election of the National Assembly (NA) of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
On January 6, 1946, Vietnamese citizens from all walks of life aged 18 and over responded to the call of President Ho Chi Minh to go to the polls to elect the first NA. The important event went down in Vietnamese history as an historic milestone, bringing Vietnamese people from slavery status to become citizens of an independent state who could decide their own destiny. This significant event also marked a great stride in the establishment of a democratic institution and opening up a new development period for the country. That was the victory of the ardent patriotism, solidarity, and the burning desire for independence and freedom of the people under the sound leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, defeating invasion and imperialist forces, affirming the position and reputation of the State of Vietnam in the international arena.
