NDO - Today, joining the atmosphere of emulation to greet the 12th National Party Congress, people from across the country are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the first general election of the National Assembly (NA) of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

On January 6, 1946, Vietnamese citizens from all walks of life aged 18 and over responded to the call of President Ho Chi Minh to go to the polls to elect the first NA. The important event went down in Vietnamese history as an historic milestone, bringing Vietnamese people from slavery status to become citizens of an independent state who could decide their own destiny. This significant event also marked a great stride in the establishment of a democratic institution and opening up a new development period for the country. That was the victory of the ardent patriotism, solidarity, and the burning desire for independence and freedom of the people under the sound leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, defeating invasion and imperialist forces, affirming the position and reputation of the State of Vietnam in the international arena.

On the path of 70 years of establishment and development, under the leadership of the Party, the Vietnamese NA has always accompanied the nation in the fight for independence, freedom and unification; in the cause of national construction and defence, reform and international integration. Over the past 70 years, with 13 tenures, the NA has unceasingly grown and performed effectively its functions and powers prescribed by the Constitution and law. Each constitution, each law, resolution and important decision made by the NA are tied to the survival of the nation because it is an important legal and political basis for the development of the socialist democracy and the building of a law-governed socialist state of Vietnam, ensuring the rights and legitimate interests of all citizen, and striving for a strong country with a wealthy people, democratic, just and civilised society.

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the first general election of the NA, Vietnamese people can be proud of the traditions of NA as well as firmly believe in the NA and the NA deputies. With a tradition of 70 years, with a sense of responsibility to the people and the future of the country, the NA will continue to innovate its organisation and operations to meet the development requirements of the country in the new period, deserving the trust of the Party, State and people, and representing the will and aspirations of the people.
