NA Chairwoman urges to turn Can Tho into Delta’s development centre

NDO – National Assembly (NA) Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has urged the ensuring of the exploitation and promotion of all resources to turn the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho into a core centre, playing a key role in the development of the whole region.
The top legislator made the suggestion while addressing the opening of the 9th municipal People's Council’s 7th session on December 5.
Reports at the meeting showed that during the implementation of the local socio-economic plan in 2017, Can Tho has maintained a high growth rate with Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) estimated at over VND66.6 trillion, up 7.83% against 2016 and exceeding 0.03% of the set plan; and GRDP per capita reached VND72.96 million, up 11.2% (equivalent to VND7.3 million) compared to 2016. Among 13 main targets, Can Tho expects to have 8/13 targets exceeding the set plan and fulfilling the remaining five indicators.
Speaking at the session, the NA Chairwoman expressed her delight at the results achieved by the city, with the GRDP increased by 7.83%, higher than the average growth rate of the whole country and several provinces in the region. She also praised Can Tho in hosting a range of external activities, especially the successful organisation of the APEC ministerial-level Food Security Week 2017 and the International Conference on Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Development for the Mekong Delta.
After sharing the outstanding results of the recently-closed 4th session of the 14th NA, Chairwoman Ngan expressed her belief that the 7th session of Can Tho People's Council would discuss and decide a range of important contents to promote local socio-economic development and national defence and security in 2018 and the following years, contributing to building and developing Can Tho into a civilised, green, clean and modern city in the gateway of the Lower Mekong River Basin, as well as a strategic centre for the Mekong Delta and the whole country.

The leader urged the city authorities to step up administrative reform, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of State management, firmly prevent and combat negative phenomena in officials and Party members, and promote anti-corruption and wastefulness in order to consolidate the people's confidence in the Party and the city administration.
According to her, the municipal People's Council should effectively coordinate with relevant agencies of the NA and concerned ministries and central units to make proposals and mechanisms for the city’s development.
During the discussion at the meeting, the NA Chairwoman suggested that participants should pay attention to groups of solutions to attract investment in the city and its urban development in the direction of smart city, while focusing on policies for low income people, job creation, and issues related to waste treatment, environmental protection and climate change response to facilitate all resources to build Can Tho city into a key centre for the regional development.
During three days of dialogue, delegates at the session will discuss, consider and decide on a range of important contents, including the operation in 2017 and the 2018 tasks for the Standing Committee of the municipal People's Council, adopting 19 reports in the fields of socio-economic development, and hosting a Q&A session on concerning local issues.
