NDO – A dragon boat racing festival was held for the first time in Hanoi’s well-known West Lake on February 24, drawing a large crowd of enthusiasts. The event aims to restore the nation’s traditional sports, create a highlight to attract tourists, and promote the development of aquatic sports.

The competition comprised 400 athletes on 27 teams representing the districts of Hanoi and a number of neighbouring provinces.

The race took place over a distance of 600m from Tran Quoc Pagoda to Ly Tu Trong Park, with men’s, women’s, and mixed categories.

District teams competed with 16-member dragon boats, while the Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, and Thai Nguyen teams battled it out on 12-member dragon boats.

The rowing teams received strong support from a troupe of drummers and local people in attendance.

The captain perched at the bow and was responsible for regulating the pace of the rowers.

The coxswain was of special significance in steering the boat in the right direction and rapidly switching course.

A child beat the drum to support her favourite team.

In the race for professionals, the Hai Duong team pocketed the gold medals for the men’s and mixed categories while the Hanoi team came first in the women’s category.
