NDO – The opera ‘Frédégonde’ by famous French composer Camille Saint-Saëns will be staged at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on the evenings of October 20 and 21.

The drama lyrique in five acts was partially composed on the island of Con Dao, Vietnam, during one of the composer’s exotic travels, to a libretto by Louis Gallet, completing an unfinished opera of the same name by Ernest Guiraud.

Through the shows, Vietnam is the first country to host the opera since it was featured in Paris in 1895, said Vincent Floreani, Consul General of France in Ho Chi Minh City, at a press conference on October 12.

‘Frédégonde’ is also the one and only French opera to be completed in Vietnam thus far, he stressed, adding that the event illustrates the close cultural links that exist between Vietnam and France.

The two performances will be directed by Caroline Blanpied and executed by artists from the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO), under the baton of accredited conductor Patrick Souillot.

They are to be held under the patronage of the Consulate General of France in Ho Chi Minh City and the French Institute in Vietnam, in collaboration with La Fabrique Opera.

According to HBSO Director Tran Vuong Thach, the event will offer Vietnamese audiences an opportunity to enjoy a beautiful opera by one of the world’s greatest composers.

Vietnamese artists are proud to perform a major work, which has yet to feature on any other stage around the world over the past century, apart from Paris, he emphasised.

Tickets can be obtained at HBSO, 7 Cong Truong Lam Son street, district 1, Ho Chi Minh City. Ticket prices range from VND 200,000 to VND 800,000 and only VND 150,000 for students.
