NDO – Bestselling children’s author Nguyen Nhat Anh has set a new record with his latest novel “Cay chuoi non di giay xanh” (Little banana tree wears green shoes), as 170,000 copies of the book were sold out right from its first publishing in early January.
The novel is printed by Tre (Youth) Publishing House and was released in late 2017, it covers themes of teenage adolescence in the familiar motif of Nguyen Nhat Anh, and revolves around the feelings of first love for teenagers in relationships with their classmates, teachers, parents, and neighbours in a village of Quang Nam province, the writer’s hometown.
The unceasing flow of readers, mainly students, queuing up from early morning to afternoon as they wait for an autograph from the writer at Hanoi Book street on January 14, is enough evidence for the charm and durability of the works by Nguyen Nhat Anh.
In the “Little banana tree wears green shoes,” the writer tells of the feelings of first love between “me” and a girl named “Tham” who are growing up in the same village and faced with a variety of anxieties and worries, as well as struggling with the internal conflicts of their teenage years. They overcome the turbulence of their adolescence to reach a happy ending, coming together as husband and wife.
Not just telling in the content, the charm that fills the works of Nguyen Nhat Anh lies in the witty narrative style employed by the talented author. It seems that he always possesses an endless inventory of episodes, language, psychological shifts, and surprises to generously build his characters and treat readers.
Nguyen Nhat Anh’s latest novel “Cay chuoi non di giay xanh” has set a new record as 170,000 copies of the book were sold out early this year.
In his latest novel, the comic element continues to be present on many pages. It is not so much humorous stories, but an “intellectual laughter” about the life and maturity of adolescence that conquers the younger generation who are wiser, intelligent, and also a little “absent-minded” in the Internet era, because they can find under the laughter some small but insightful lessons that the writer has created in the subtextually space: "When we are angry with someone for so long, the coldness is no longer the expression of emotions but gradually become a habit," " when people grow, joy and sadness grow up also," "even dreams grow up…"
Like many previous works of Nguyen Nhat Anh, reading “Little banana tree wears green shoes,” children find themselves reading about their present life, and adults receive a ticket back to their childhood. Nguyen Nhat Anh writes stories from his countryside in central Vietnam, but he always finds the most common and most unique characteristic in the world of childhood that everyone has in common and is not confined by geographic space. Therefore, it can be said that he is a secretary recording the childhood for many people through his literature. Such qualities have allowed his work to retain a long-term appeal to readers.
In recent years, Nguyen Nhat Anh has repeatedly set new records. At the beginning of 2018, he broke his own "utopian" record in publishing. “Ngay xua co mot chuyen tinh” (The past love story) sold more than 100,000 copies in the first few weeks of its release at the end of 2016.This time, “Little banana tree wears green shoes” sold over 170,000 copies of its first edition. It is said that if Nguyen Nhat Anh does not seek to surpass his record by himself, it is unknown when it will be shattered! Possessing many publishing records, perhaps at this time he is still the only "billionaire writer" in Vietnam earning such income from royalties.
Readers queue for author Nguyen Nhat Anh’s signature on his new novel.
