National Don Ca Tai Tu Festival kicks off in Binh Duong

NDO – A ceremony was held in the southern province of Binh Duong on April 8 to officially open the second National Don Ca Tai Tu (traditional musical art form of the south) Festival.
The event was attended by former President Nguyen Minh Triet, and former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, along with Politburo member, Secretary of Party Central Committee (PCC) and Head of the PCC’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation Truong Thi Mai; former Politburo member and Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Le Thanh Hai; and former Vice-President Truong My Hoa.
An arts programme at the inaugural ceremony, entitled, ‘Treasure of the south’, with the participation of numerous artisans, artists, actors and actresses, left an indelible impression on the audience.
Based on the theme, ‘Southern Don ca tai tu—Preservation and Development’, the festival aims to honour and promote this unique art form, which was recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity to domestic people and international friends.
The five-day event features a range of unique activities including performances of Don ca tai tu and a space for gastronomical delights every night, a Don ca tai tu competition, themed ‘Don ca tai tu – a southern heritage’, a photo contest on Don ca tai tu singing and an exchange programme for outstanding artisans.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Nguyen Ngoc Thien, appreciated the significant contributions of southern provinces and cities, writers, artisans, artists and overseas Vietnamese to preserving and promoting the Don ca tai tu arts.
Chairman of the Binh Duong provincial People’s Committee, Tran Thanh Liem, emphasised that the activities during the festival aim to inspire passion and encourage artists and artisans to preserve the values of Don ca tai tu, the southern traditional art form, contributing to effectively implementing cultural development strategies.
The event is also expected to strengthen regional cooperation in terms of investment, trade and tourism promotion in order to utilise potentials of southern provinces and cities.
The first National Don Ca Tai Tu festival was held in the southern province of Bac Lieu in 2014.
