NDO – Measures to develop Ngoc Linh ginseng were discussed at a workshop, jointly held by Nhan Dan Newspaper and the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee, in Tam Ky city on June 12.
Participants focused on evaluating the status quo of ginseng cultivation, research and development, while recommending special policies and practical solutions to develop Ngoc Linh ginseng into a spearhead economic plant. They also looked at strengthening the competitiveness of products made from Vietnamese ginseng, especially since Vietnam ginseng (Ngoc Linh ginseng) has been added to the list of national products under the National Product Development Programme until 2020.
Ngoc Linh ginseng contains 52 saponin compounds, including 26 already known compounds (often found in the Korean, US and Japanese ginseng) and 26 saponin pammaran, with new structures which are not found in any other types of ginseng around the world.
In addition, the Vietnamese ginseng consists of 14 fatty acids, 16 acid amin and 18 macronutrients and micronutrients.
Addressing the workshop, Vice Chairman of the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee Le Minh Tri affirmed that Quang Nam considers the development of Ngoc Linh ginseng and other precious types of medicinal plants as a key direction, seeking to reduce poverty among the mountainous residents.
According to a report by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Quang Nam has issued mechanisms to encourage, preserve and develop Ngoc Linh ginseng, with the ginseng cultivation area, under the forest canopy in Nam Tra My district, planned to reach nearly 15,000 hectares by 2030.
So far, two stations have been set up in service of the preservation, cultivation and storage of Ngoc Linh ginseng gene sources, on an area of approximately 20 hectares, possessing 230,000 original seedlings and producing 50,000-60,000 new seedlings each year. A total of nine businesses have registered to invest in Ngoc Linh ginseng cultivation, with an area of thousands of hectares, while over 10 kinds of products made from Ngoc Linh ginseng have been provided to the market.
The provincial People’s Committee recommended that the functional agencies adjust and supplement support policies for the conservation and development of Ngoc Linh ginseng, in accordance with the reality.
Director of the Thai Hoa Liability Co. Ltd, To Manh Cuong expressed his wish to apply modern technology and biotechnology in breeding, growing and processing Ngoc Linh ginseng, while suggesting the research of ginseng cultivation in greenhouses and the creation of a legal corridor to protect consumers and authentic producers and traders from the trading of counterfeit ginseng.
Chairman of the Nam Tra My district People’s Committee Ho Quang Buu asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to research standard seedlings and provide a large volume, as well as to implement national-level projects to grow ginseng in the regions at an altitude of 1,000-2,400 metres. Besides, it is also necessary to advertise Ngoc Linh ginseng through various means, he said.
In his concluding speech, Deputy Editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper Phan Huy Hien said that the workshop is a continuation of the talk entitled “Sustainable development of medicinal materials” jointly held by Nhan Dan Newspaper and the Health Ministry in June 2016, seeking to contribute to developing Ngoc Linh ginseng into Vietnam’s spearhead economic plant.
From the workshop’s results, Nhan Dan Newspaper will continue accompanying localities and the health sector to organise other talks and seminars, as part of the joint efforts to communicate and implement the Government’s policy to develop medicinal materials, Hien noted.
